Wilderness Wanderings for Women

Winter CampingAurora, Ontario February 2007: This last weekend, Wilderness Wanderings took a group of women out for its debut winter camp. After a struggle to get through the deep snow on snowshoes to the heated building, the group relaxed with hot tea and hot chocolate. On Saturday they built a big snow mountain by shovelling loose snow on top and later in the afternoon, hollowed out this large hill with the goal to sleep in the Quinzee at night. After completion, the group went snowshoeing with a background of beautiful snow covered trees, a frozen lake and wonderful sights.  Three women slept outside in the snow and all survived with a feeling of incredible strength and newfound energy.

Jenn Bate, from Oak Ridges said about the weekend, “I don’t remember the last time I laughed so much. The weekend not only rejuvenated the kid-like me but lifted my spirits 120%”  Kelly Store from Newmarket said,  “You helped me feel like if I can survive in the cold winter and sleep outside then I can survive anything. It gave me a new sense of energy and strength.” Another anonymous participant said, “This opportunity to enjoy nature, spend time with others and boost my serotonin levels!!!! A natural anti-depressant.”

Wilderness Wanderings is a business that provides women in transition with an opportunity for exploration. Clients are women who have experienced different life experiences and who are now ready to restart their lives with increased confidence, self-esteem and self-reliance. The vision of Wilderness Wanderings is that every woman has the right to make a positive difference in her life by experiencing the wilderness and then to be able to contribute back to her community in a confident way. Wilderness Wanderings organizes unique trips that vary from introductory day trips to weekend trips; for the more advanced participants, there are also weeklong trips. The trips are focused for women only to give them a greater sense of accomplishment without dealing with the demands of daily life, such as caring for their children. This unique approach for women only, gives our customers a chance to reach their full potential and realize how much more they can take on in their lives.

For the last 20 years, Emmy Hendrickx has worked with Girl Guides of Canada and is fully experienced and qualified to take women out on wilderness expeditions.

Although the office of Wilderness Wanderings is located in Aurora, the trips will be in South Ontario, year round. Hiking and Backpacking are offered in the spring and fall, Canoe trips in the summer, and winter camping including snowshoeing, tobogganing and an option to sleep in a Quinzee.
